Introduction

Cooperative education is a full time, paid, rotational, field-based experience that is a critical component of a student’s academic program. Upon successful completion of a co-op field rotation, a student will receive a formal notation on her/his transcript. At Georgia State University, students complete two, separate 6-month field placements of work that are directly related to their major in approved placements, then return to complete their academic studies as full-time students. They do not take formal classes during their co-op placements.

While in the field, the student is compensated at a salary level consistent with a full-time employee with similar skill sets. A co-op provides on-site supervision, training and concrete learning objectives with the goal of broadening skills and knowledge as well as career confidence. On-site supervisors provide regular feedback about the student’s progress.

  • Co-ops are open to any major with a co-op track.
  • Current majors with a co-op track include: Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Political Science (International, Pre-law, and Government Concentrations), and Geosciences (GIS Concentration).
  • Georgia State students seeking co-op eligibility must enroll in the pre-co-op program and successfully complete all requirements, including the co-op preparation workshops hosted by University Career Services, complete the required courses, maintain the required GPA for co-op admissions and be approved in advance by their faculty or staff advisor.
  • Georgia State’s co-op is based on an intense, structured 4-year model. Our goal is for students to gain two full semesters of cooperative education experience.
